When you take deep inhalations using your diaphragm and slowly release the exhale, your brain gets the message that you are safe. There are no threats present and it’s okay to rest.

This isn’t woo. This is your physiology.

Breathwork is one of the only tools that gives you direct, conscious access to your autonomic nervous system. The part that controls your heart rate, your stress response, and whether your body feels safe enough to sleep.

When you make your exhale longer than your inhale, you stimulate the vagus nerve and activate the parasympathetic nervous system: your body’s built-in rest-and-digest response. This lowers your heart rate, reduces cortisol, and signals to your brain that the threat has passed. You can stop bracing. You can rest.

This is especially important for midlife women when declining estrogen and progesterone disrupt the body’s ability to regulate cortisol.

I’m a certified trauma-informed breathwork facilitator, certified menopause coaching specialist, health coach, Pilates instructor and host of the Midlife Advice podcast.
